THE CONTESTING OF THE AMERICAN DREAM PURSUIT IN THE 2008 HOUSING CRISIS PORTRAYED IN RAMIN BAHRANI’S 99 HOMES (2014)

This research aimed to analyze: 1) the challenges of the American Dreamduring the 2008 housing crisis in 99 Homes (2014) and 2) the Housing Crisischallenges the ideal of the American Dream for working-class families asportrayed in 99 Homes (2014). The research uses a descriptive qualitative methodto analyze the film of 99 Homes (2014) directed by Ramin Bahrani as the objectresearch. The data collection methods include watching, reading, identifying, classifying, and selecting. The researcher utilizes James Truslow Adam ‘s theory ofAmerican Dream to analyze the data through steps of displaying, explaining, andinterpreting. The result of this research shows that: 1) the representation of AmericanDream in Ramin Bahrani ‘s 99 Homes (2014) appears to be a failed concept. Themain character, Dennis Nash, works hard but still loses his home, despite pleadingwith the judge. This suggests that hard work does not always lead to success. Evenwhen Dennis gains a luxurious home, it is through morally questionablemeans, working for the person who evicted his family. 2) the housing crisis madethe American Dream unattainable. Homeownership, a symbol of stability, becameunattainable, and working-class individuals like Dennis had to struggle, evensacrifice their morals, to maintain the hope of a proper life.
