THE SIGNIFICANCE OF LIVING CONSTRUCTED BY TERMINAL ILLNESS PATIENT REFLECTED IN MIDNIGHT SUN (2018) FILM AND SOUNDTRACKS

This thesis aims to analyze: 1) To explain how the soundtrack lyricsand cinematography elements in Midnight Sun (2018) movie constructmeaning related to the main character’s psychological state in dealing withterminal illness, and 2) to explain how the meaning of life, as viewed by aterminal illness patient, is reflected through the lyrics of movie soundtracksand the cinematography elements. The study employs qualitative methodsand utilizes semiotics, film semiotics, and a cinematography approach toanalyze the soundtrack and the cinematography elements. The focus islimited to how the soundtrack lyrics and cinematography elements inMidnight Sun (2018) movie portray the main character’s psychologicalcondition and her views on the meaning of life when facing a terminalillness. The finding of this study shows that, first, the terminal illness patientpsychological state is explained through depression/fear, happiness andlove, and steadfastness and reception. Second, the meaning of life areexplained through carpe diem/living in the present, hopeful despitelimitations, and acceptance of reality and death.
