AN ANALYSIS OF GENERATION Z SLANG EXPRESSIONS ON COLUMN COMMENT KAVO TIKTOK ACCOUNT

This study analyzes the use of slang expressions by Generation Z users inthe comments section of the TikTok account kavo. The research aims to addresstwo main questions: (1) How are types of slang expressions are used byGeneration Z in the comments? (2) How are the functions of these slangexpressions?This research uses a qualitative descriptive approach by utilizing contentanalysis of comments on selected TikTok videos. Data was collected through nineGeneration Z TikTok accounts in the comments column of the TikTok videobelonging to the Kavo account. To answer the problem formulation and drawconclusions from this research, the selected data was analyzed by researchersthrough several steps, namely displaying, explaining and interpreting. Theapproach and theory that researchers use is the theory of Allan & Burridge toanalyze types of slangs and function of slangs.The findings revealed three main types of slang expressions: fresh andcreative (Yapping), imitative (It's Giving, It is what it is, Character Development,Canon Event, Do it for the plot), and acronyms ( LMAO, Fr, and IDGAF). Thesediverse types demonstrate the linguistic creativity and adaptability of GenerationZ in creating and adopting new slang terms. Furthermore, the analysis uncoveredvarious functions of these slang expressions, including humiliating (Yapping),forming intimate atmospheres (LMAO and IDGAF), expressing impressions(Character Development), showing intimacy (It’s Giving, Do it for the plot,Canon Event), and Initate relax conversation ( Fr and It’s what it is). Thesefunctions highlight the significant social and communicative roles that slang playsin online interactions among Generation Z users.The study concludes that slang usage on TikTok serves as an importantmeans for Generation Z to foster closeness, express themselves creatively, andestablish group identity in digital spaces. This research contributes to ourunderstanding of youth language practices on social media and has implicationsfor educators, content creators, and intergenerational communication.
