The Weakening of Animal Cruelty Stereotypes in Craig Gillespie’s CRUELLA (2021)

This study aims to find out that (1) Cruella’s actions help weaken animalcruelty stereotypes and (2) America’s efforts to reduce these stereotypes in theAmerican fashion world through Cruella’s actions in Cruella (2021).The research method is qualitative. Data collection techniques includewatching, reading, identifying, classifying, simplifying, and selecting. To analyzethe data, the researcher uses the sociology of literature theory, involving steps suchas displaying, explaining, and interpreting.The research results show that, first, Cruella’s actions help to weaken animalcruelty stereotypes demonstrated by Cruella’s harmonious relationship with abrown dog named Buddy. It is shown as she plays, cuddles, and talks to him. Inreturn, Buddy remains calm, listens to Cruella’s stories, and assists her whennecessary. They also show their love by protecting each other. Second, America’sefforts to reduce animal cruelty stereotypes in the fashion world through Cruella’sactions are evident in her clothing designs. These include using recycled materials,modern fashion technology, and her awareness of animal life. This indirectly showsAmerica’s efforts in mitigating animal cruelty in fashion through Cruella’scharacter.
