    DEIXIS ANALYSIS OF GABRIEL IGLESIAS’S UTTERANCES IN STAND-UP COMEDY WE HAVE SO MUCH IN COMMON (2023)

    This study discusses Deixis. It is the term from Greek which means pointing bylanguage. Deixis existed in written or spoken language. These things are essentialto understanding by English speakers or learners. This study was conducted todiscover the types of deixis and the reference of deixis in Gabriel’s utterances in thestand-up comedy We Have So Much in Common. In analyzing the data, the writeruses George Yule’s theory. This research was based on descriptive design byapplying qualitative methods and converting the data numerically. The data wasobtained by downloading the video from Gabriel's YouTube channel. The data isthen analyzed by watching and writing out the subtitles of the comedy show andsorting out the utterances that contain deixis in them. The findings of this studyshowed that those three types of deixis found in Gabriel's utterances are persondeixis which occurred 674 times, spatial deixis, which occurred 254 times, andtemporal deixis, which occurred 62 times. The type of deixis that is most commonlyfound in person deixis. The use of personal deixis indicated the participant in thiscomedy show. While the spatial deixis indicated the location and place of the eventfrom the participant. Moreover, the temporal deixis indicates the timing of speechevents which is used in this comedy show.
