This thesis explores the types and functions of dysphemism found in thecomments section of the Instagram account @girlsdefense. Dysphemism, definedas the use of derogatory or offensive language, is analyzed in the context of socialmedia interactions, specifically focusing on comments related to the Israeli army'sposts. The study identifies various types of dysphemisms, including terms ofinsult, imprecations, epithets, comparisons to animals, "-IST" based dysphemisms, profane swearing, and taboo terms. The functions of dysphemisms observedinclude negative descriptions of groups, expressions of anger, and directhumiliation. The research methodology involves a qualitative analysis ofInstagram comments, categorizing them into distinct types and functions ofdysphemism. Data is collected from the comment section of the @girlsdefenseaccount and analyzed to identify patterns and recurring themes. The findings reveal that dysphemisms are predominantly used to denigrate certaingroups and express anger. Common types include animal comparisons (e.g., "pig,""dog"), "-IST" based dysphemisms (e.g., "terrorist"), and profane swearing. Thesedysphemisms serve to dehumanize targets, express anger and frustration, humiliate the perceived enemy, and convey strong negative sentiments andsolidarity with the Palestinian cause. While primarily used to denigrate andexpress anger, dysphemisms are less frequently employed for descriptive oremphatic purposes. This research highlights the prevalence and impact of abusivelanguage on social media, contributing to a deeper understanding of onlineinteractions and the linguistic elements involved.
