THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE TPR (TOTAL PHYSICAL RESPONSE) METHOD IN INCREASING THE MASTERY OF ENGLISH VOCABULARY TO THE SEVENTH GRADERS OF SMP ISLAM YMI WONOPRINGGO

This research focuses: on 1) describing the application of the Total Physical Response method to improve students' mastery of English vocabulary at SMP IslamYMI Wonopringgo and 2) identifying the effectiveness of using the TPR method in teaching English to improve students' vocabulary mastery at SMP Islam YMI Wonopringgo. Teaching English to the seventh grade of junior high school mean steaching children aged 11 to 13. In teaching English to children, teachers play animportant role as teachers must be able to generate interest and motivation in theirstudents to learn English. This research conducts quantitative and descriptivequalitative research methods; the researcher performs action research using theTotal Physical Response Method; this research is quasi-experimental due to thenon-random selection of participants for an answering questionnaire. The datacollection in this research using the research instruments are tests, and theclassroom action research is includes learning activities and will be conducting inseven meetings in this research. This research shows the following results: 1) Thereare three stages of teaching and learning activity: Pre-Test with an average score of75, First Cycle with an average score of 89, and Second Cycle with an average scoreof 91. 2) The student's vocabulary mastery improves with the pre-test descriptionto the First cycle increasing by 14%, and the First cycle to the Second cycle,increasing by 2%. Therefore, it can conclude that using the TPR method canimprove students' vocabulary by 16%. Based on the result of the research, which isable to find that the researcher already concluded that coaching English vocabularythrough TPR is useful for the students with the purpose to facilitate studentslearning English vocabulary. It is advice that TPR in teaching English vocabularyis usefully recommended for the English teacher.
